This paper describes how due to the nature of participation, the Open Source community can excel in diversity, whilst at the same time fall short for reasons of active and passive discrimination. Using gender imbalance as an example, aspects of diversity failures such as identifying causes, reparative actions and the reasons for doing so are discussed

Melissa Draper is a web developer by trade, but invests most of her free time into Open Source advocacy. She has written articles for Linux.com and leads her local LUG, but her primary focus area is the Ubuntu community. Within Ubuntu, Melissa coordinates the Local Community teams project at the global level, and has attended Developer Summits in California and Spain as part of this. She also leads the local Australian Ubuntu team, and contributes to the Ubuntu Marketing Team among other things. Melissa is also an active contributor in various groups advocating the participation of women in Open Source such as LinuxChix and Ubuntu-Women.
