Stuart Guthrie is the CTO of Polonious a small software development company based in Sydney. In less than two years Polonious has grown from the two founders to 11 staff - 7 of which are java developers. Polonious' software is founded on the application of java open source components combined with careful risk-managing the upgrades and release cycles to match their own development pace. You will see two main case histories. The first an on-going bespoke development for a health insurer. The second is an on-going, never ending software product development which embraces 50 open source libraries from the various sources. This talk will impart how you can do the same, what to watch out for and how much fun it is beating Microsoft ISV's who (in the enterprise space) must start the pricing at 10-15K _before they make profit themselves.
